Chiropractic, Is It Right for your Back Pain?
Of all the ways to relieve your back pain naturally, chiropractic is by far the most used type of alternative health care for back pain. If you have never been treated by a Chiropractor, it is understandable that you may be apprehensive about your first visit to one. Knowing in advance about what a chiropractor is going to do might help ease your concerns.
Chiropractors treat health problems that are associated with the body’s
muscular, nervous, and skeletal systems. They are especially concerned with the bones of the spine, and the nerves that travel between those joints. Chiropractors believe that the correct alignment of the spine is necessary for the nervous system to function properly. The science of chiropractic is mainly based around spinal manipulation, which is also known as the chiropractic adjustment. During spinal manipulation, a practitioner will use his hands to mobilize, adjust, or stimulate the spine and the surrounding tissues to relieve the pain in your back, neck, hips, etc…
Chiropractors practice a drug-free, manual approach to heal their patients.
Some chiropractors use other techniques in addition to the chiropractic adjustment to relieve your back pain. These include techniques using ultrasound, electric impulses, acupuncture, and heat and ice. They also may recommend support products such as braces, straps and tapes. Some chiropractors may counsel patients about wellness concepts such as exercises for back pain, changes in lifestyle, what foods should they eat, and stress management. Chiropractors will never prescribe drugs nor do surgery.
The first thing that a chiropractor is going to do whenever you go into their
office is to explore the nature of your problem in one way or another. He will speak with you and take a history of your pain and general health. An x-ray will often be taken in order to determine if there are any hidden problems, such as something being out of alignment.
Many chiropractors will “warm you up” before they actually do any adjustments by applying heat or electric stimulation. Some people consider this to be somewhat uncomfortable but others consider it to be a pleasant experience. They simply put a low energy electrical pulse into your muscles. They may also do some massage therapy in order to warm up the problem spot and get it ready for the chiropractic adjustment to take place.
Using spinal manipulation, the chiropractor will gently get your spine back
into alignment again. It is generally not necessary for him to do this with jerking
motions to correct the back pain. In fact, it is usually better for the patient if the chiropractor gently works the problem area until the spinal bones go back into place. Many people feel immediate relief after going for a chiropractic treatment, but it may take several sessions before your back pain is eliminated altogether. Adding some lifestyle changes that the chiropractor may recommend will help the healing process to go much more smoothly.
Good luck with your chiropractic treatment!
